Planning a wedding weekend in Bath

A World Heritage City

 We have always loved the city of Bath and feel very fortunate that all these wonderful things to do and see are right on the doorstep of our beautiful countryside wedding venue here at Priston Mill.

There is already so much to plan with getting married in Bath, and even more so if you aren’t local to us so we thought we would put some ideas together to make your wedding weekend in Bath even more memorable.

 For the Explorers

 There is nothing more majestic than the views over Bath early morning before the mist lifts or late evening when the golden hour honours us with its presence. The Bath skyline walk is the very best way to walk the high perimeter of the city and look down over its beauty. You can download the map for the walk from the national trust website.

 For the History Buffs

 The Roman city of Bath is steeped in history – if you love to learn about ancient artefacts and architecture then this is the city for you.

The Roman Baths are the epicentre of the city and the reason that Bath is a UNESCO world heritage site. Built around 70AD the baths were a large gathering and socialising place. They are one of the largest best preserved Roman remains in the world – you can’t miss them and if you have guests travelling from afar for your wedding, they will be mesmerised by it! If you are brave enough you can also taste the spa water at the end of your tour – it contains 43 minerals and has been said to be extremely curative.

 The Royal Crescent will take your breath away, the curved façade of the buildings and the golden Bath stone marry beautifully to make one of Baths most iconic landmarks. Made up of 30 Grade 1 listed terrace houses it is one of the greatest examples of Georgian architecture anywhere. You will see that all the doors on the crescent are to be painted white and left that way however in the 70’s one resident of number 22 decided to paint her door yellow, the council insisted that it be painted white, a court case ensued and Miss Annabel Wellesley-Colley won her case and the door remains yellow to this day.

 For the Foodies

We are very lucky to have some amazing independent eateries in the city which mean that dinner and drinks the night before your wedding day or breakfast with family and friends the morning after the wedding are all catered for.

Some of our favourites are below:-

 Rosarios – Northumberland passage: A wonderful family run Italian café that serves a mean breakfast – poached duck egg on ciabatta with pesto and sun dried tomatoes or Rosarios salmon and eggs served with avocado and a homemade potato rosti…all this alongside the most amazing coffee will set you right up for the day. It gets busy as it’s a locals favourite spot on the weekends, be prepared to wait for a table or book ahead of time.

Hudsons – Walcott Street: An independently run award winning steak house, specialising in prime dry aged steaks. A classic in the city and well worth the 5 minute walk up through the artisan quarter of Bath. 

Vino Vino – Saw Close: The most amazing wine /cocktail bar. The staff here know their stuff, hundreds of wines by the glass so something that will please everyone. They also do sharing boards which are the perfect accompaniment.

Sally Lunn – North parade: If you love an afternoon tea Sally Lunn’s is a must visit, the oldest building in Bath and home of the infamous Sally Lunn Bun – have either sweet or savoury or grab one boxed to take away. You will not be disappointed. 

 For the people that need a little relaxation

 There is nothing better than a little relaxation and pampering the day before your beautiful countryside wedding in Bath.

The Thermae Bath Spa is the best place in the city for it – with the natural spa waters still being pumped from the volcanic layers below the city to fill the pools in the spa, you will feel all the tension of planning your wedding melt away, ready to celebrate the next day. The rooftop pool is a highlight but also don’t miss the wellness suite with 5 sensory experiences on the middle floor of the beautiful spa.

 For a little Retail Therapy

 Bath is full of wonderful independent shops, everything from clothing to antiques and we're lucky that it is so close to our wedding venue - which is just 7 miles from Bath. Milsom Street is the main arterial street with smaller side streets running off of it. If groomsmen have forgotten cufflinks – then head to Gabucci, the best men’s outfitters in the city! Or the bride has forgotten her garter then The Dressing Room is where you need to be.

One of our favourites is The Loft on Bartlett Street which is a beautifully curated homewares and clothing shop with the added bonus of Café Lucca that serves salads to die for. Perfect for a light lunch while shopping.

 For the people who want a little culture

 Bath is home to some amazing Art galleries and museums, they are a great way to break up a busy day shopping or a lovely afternoon activity to extend your wedding weekend in Bath.

The Holburne Museum: The Holburne blends the old and new seamlessly, re-developed in 2011, the museum houses thousands of pieces and is free to visit. We are also lucky enough that there are many touring exhibitions that visit the Holbourne throughout the year.

 The Fashion Museum: Housed in the basements of the Bath Assembly rooms, which in their own right are a wonder. The permanent exhibits are ‘History of Fashion in 100 objects’ which depicts how fashion has changed over the years with key items, and they also have ‘Dress of the year 2019’ on show. Each season they also have a temporary exhibit which this year is due to be Shoephoria – for all those shoe lovers out there.
