Explore the Watermill

The Watermill is an enchanting building steeped in history and a fascinating and unique setting for a wedding.

“Given by King Athelstan to the monks of Bath Abbey in the 10th century, the Watermill, is quite simply the kind of location people dream of.”

Watermill virtual tour available

As you enter the Watermill, you will notice the surrounding, picturesque private gardens and the grand panorama of the rolling countryside beyond. A small brook marks one boundary of the gardens with wooden seating arranged on manicured lawns, an attractive pagoda (idyllic for outdoor wedding ceremonies), and a wonderful pergola. This pergola, encircled by flowers and climbers, offers guests an arbour of tranquillity complete with the mesmerising sound of water bubbling over the central millstone water-feature.

Three of the floors in the Watermill are exclusively yours and are easily accessed by stairs or lift (the top floor used by the chefs and waiting team)  On entering the Watermill you will be greeted by the gentle, rumbling sounds of the ancient waterwheel and the spectacular rotating gears and cogs. It is on this floor that guests may leave their coats and gifts.

On the first floor there is an amazing, birds-eye view through glass floor panels, of the massive iron waterwheel. There are cosy areas here with comfortable seating and is a perfect place for reception drinks; coffee after the meal and as a social area in the evening. You will see a well-stocked bar featuring local ciders and beers, with competitive bar tariffs similar to Bath country pub prices.

The main reception floor successfully combines the feeling of spaciousness with one of intimacy. There is a wonderful view aloft high into the rafters and yet, with hesian wall hangings across the arches, the room provides a private, smaller area for the ceremony. For a wedding or dinner party we can set up to 9 round tables for the meal providing seating for up to 90. These tables are draped in white linen and they along with the linen napkins, cutlery, crockery, table numbers and glassware are all included in the prices. The timeless, grey slate windowsills look equally stylish decorated with only candles and a little ivy as they do with impressive garlands of professionally arranged flowers.

It is from this main floor that the party (max 120) may spill out onto the wooden terrace and enjoy the scenic views over the millpond and gardens.  In the evenings, with music resonating from within and the terrace attractively flood-lit, this is a particularly magical spot.
